Success at Hamilton Southeastern is not about who is the fastest or the strongest; it is about who can think, speak, and build under pressure. The school’s massive roster of competitive clubs, ranging from the mechanical skill of Robotics to the persuasive power of DECA, serves as a training ground for real-world excellence. Members of Speech and Debate and Math Club are sharpening their minds to compete at the highest levels. This culture of constant improvement ensures that every Royal has a place to prove their skill.
HSE offers a wide variety of clubs for any interest, from community focused groups like Riley Dance Marathon and Make-A-Wish to hobby-based groups like Drama and Fossil Club. However, certain clubs rise above the rest when it comes to the level at which they compete.
One of these is Esports. This club, which has been active since the fall of 2021, competes across the country in the Indiana High School Esports Network and the Electronic Gaming Federation. Members compete in games such as Rocket League, Overwatch, and Super Smash Bros., allowing them to develop strong bonds while competing in something they love.
Another club competing at the highest level is DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). Established at HSE in 2005, this organization prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, and management. Students compete at the district, state, and international levels. In the past two years, the HSE DECA program has seen over 20 members qualify for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), the highest level of competition in the organization.
While DECA focuses on business, Speech and Debate is another premier option centered on the art of persuasion. This club helps students increase their public speaking confidence with help from coaches and teammates. The HSE team is a member of the Indiana Schools Speech and Debate Association (ISSDA) and the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), which operates similarly to the National Honor Society by awarding merit points based on competitive performance.
As the list of competitive clubs continues to grow, so do the opportunities for students to find their niche. At HSE, there is no such thing as a “standard” competitor; you are just as likely to find a champion in a computer lab as you are on a traditional field. For those looking to test their limits, the message is clear: whether your strength lies in logic, leadership, or athletics, there is a team waiting for you to carry on the school’s tradition of competitive excellence.
