Preforming Arts Guest Speaker from the Dave Matthews Band
On February 27th, Jeff Coffin, a three time Grammy winner and member of the Dave Matthews band came to Hamilton Southeastern to lead a clinic on improvisation. He broke Improvisation to it’s core elements, broke down many of the complexities of notation, and ultimately showed that improvisation is as easy as having a conversation. Attendees to this clinic included majority of band students, as well as a several orchestra students.
German State Competiton – Staatskongress
On February 7th, the German State Competition, Staatskongress was at HSE for the first time this year. This event held culture competitions (art, food, maps, charts, handcrafts, Gingerbread Houses), academic competitions, and work shops on the theme (Fairy Tales Grimm – er than you think). They catered a German lunch as well as holding Kaffee Stunde (coffee hour) where students can try the cookies, cakes and other goodies from the food competitions. To end the competiton, there was a dance with a German Oktoberfest Band.
National Night of Journalism
On February 18th, the Media and Communications department hosted the National Night of Journalism. This was a discussion moderated by John Krull, a director at the Pulliam School of Journalism and featured journalists Linsey Davis, an ABC news anchor, as well as Eric Bradner, the CNN Political Correspondent. The professional journalists talked about their experiences covering the current media, politics, and hard news and controversial topics. They also provided insight into their journeys to becoming high level journalists.
Current Issues Presentations
On February 19th, Mrs. Chandlers Current Issues class had Olympic Newscast Presentations to better understand the Olympic Events that were relevant at the time. Students took on the roles of Olympians and reporters to explore different perspectives and learn how to present themselves in professional settings.
American Sign Language Level 2 Song Presentations
On February 12th, Ms. Colvin’s ASL 2 class held song presentations. Student groups selected theme songs to interpret in American Sign Language, including selections from Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, Scooby-Doo, Hannah Montana, and more. These presentations helped students develop their interpreting skills and build confidence signing in front of others which is an important step toward effectively communicating with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the future.
Overall, February was an exciting month filled with a wide range of academic events that provided students with new experiences and valuable professional insights.
