Scholarships are often thought of as a complicated aspect of the college admissions process. Many students don’t even know where to access available scholarships or how many opportunities are truly out there. In the podcast Find Your Future with Mrs. Bush, the episode “Scholarships!!!!” explains where to find scholarships and how students should go about applying.
In the episode, Mrs. Bush explains that seniors should start looking for scholarships at their chosen school, then locally, and finally nationally. She stresses the importance of consistently applying for scholarships, especially for students who need additional financial help to cover college costs. At HSE, the top places to look for scholarships are Naviance, the College & Career Canvas page, and the Senior Canvas page.
“Naviance is your one-stop shop for scholarships that we know about,” Bush said. “There are about 500 scholarships in Naviance now.”
After applying for scholarships at their school of choice, students can still find many opportunities locally. The next step after searching through schools is looking at places seniors have connections to, such as churches, parents’ workplaces, students’ jobs, and county organizations. After applying for these scholarships, seniors should then begin searching nationally.
HSE junior Kiayah Alexander, who is featured in the podcast episode, asked for further clarification regarding scholarships from a student’s college of choice and scholarships found elsewhere.
“I know schools give you scholarships, but that is only when you apply to that school and apply for the scholarships it provides,” Alexander said. “But you can apply for unrelated scholarships that you can also put toward the cost?”
