While most students only know Senior SAGE as the recognition award at HSE High School, the Student of the Month award flies under the radar, but rewards students of all grades every month. Each month, every student is eligible to be nominated by a teacher in order to recognize their positive contributions to HSE.
The Student of the Month award allows teachers to nominate their students for excellent behavior or good work, and students who are awarded the prize receive a certificate and other items such as a Culver’s certificate and a pencil.
While this award may be less known and lower profile, the recognition provides a sense of pride to the recipients and encourages them to continue their positive behavior. “This award motivates me to continue setting a positive example for others”, recipient Eden Masterson says, “and to keep pushing myself to improve academically and personally.”

Another Student of the Month for January, Lola Unger, says, “It gave me a confidence boost knowing one of my teachers noticed how hard I work and being awarded for that only grows my motivation in school.” The award, while maybe not as known throughout the school, gives students a feeling of pride and community, as they feel that their hard work pays off, and that they are noticed and recognized in a school of thousands.
The Student of the Month award has proved to be very impactful and allows non-senior students to feel valued and appreciated in a school of thousands. While a smaller, and lesser-known prize, the award encourages students to continue their behavior and contribute positively to HSE High School, in a way that will ensure they leave an impact. Students feel seen, and like they don’t just disappear into the background, and that their positivity does not go unnoticed.
The Student of the Month award encourages all students to implement this positive behavior and impactful contributions to their classes and the school in general. As Eden Masterson says, “I will continue to do my best to uplift those around me and work hard on every challenge thrown my way.”
