While it’s exciting to think about, there are many things you won’t truly understand until you’re there. College can be both fun and stressful, so being prepared makes all the difference. Before you buy out the store for your dorm or sign up for every club, HSE graduate Gloria Lane shares the five most important things to know about college.
- Most learning happens outside of class. Gloria explains, “You have so much reading. You really have to learn a lot outside of class and on your own.” In college, professors guide you, but much of the responsibility for understanding the material is on you. Staying organized and disciplined is key.
- Schedules don’t always line up. “In high school everyone is done at three and sometimes extracurriculars go until six. In college, your break might be from 12–3, but your friends might be free from 4–7,” Gloria says. Unlike high school, there isn’t one set schedule. You’ll need to adjust and be flexible with your time, even when it doesn’t match your friends’.
- Independence is a big part of the experience. “Sometimes you have to eat alone or go to the store alone—and it’s okay, it’s not embarrassing.” College helps you grow into independence. While it might feel strange at first, most people are focused on their own lives, not on what you’re doing. Learning to be comfortable with independence is an important step.
- Get involved. “Join things—clubs, sports, musicals, groups. It’s the best way to stay involved and have a good experience.” Being part of campus activities helps you make connections and creates balance outside of academics. These experiences often become the most memorable parts of college.
- It’s okay to say no. “Say no when needed,” Gloria advises. College life comes with endless opportunities—events, clubs, and social gatherings. But it’s important to know your limits. It’s okay to say no in order to focus on homework, rest, or your own well-being.
College comes with new freedoms, challenges, and responsibilities—but also incredible opportunities for growth. Gloria’s advice shows that success isn’t just about academics, it’s about balance, independence, and knowing your limits. If you keep these five lessons in mind, you’ll be better prepared to navigate the ups and downs of college life and truly make the most of your experience.
