On Aug. 26, Kelsey Mitchell made franchise history and broke Caitlin Clark’s record for most points in a single season. She broke the record in the first quarter and finished the game with 787 points, passing Clark’s 769.
“Kelsey has been carrying us. You look at the numbers, and her numbers have been incredible all season long,” said coach Stephanie White (Essentially Sports, Aug. 26, 2025)
Mitchell has always been a key part of the team since she was drafted in 2018, but has recently stepped up. Her numbers speak for themselves with her leading the team in scoring most of the season and becoming the first player in the franchise to average over 20 points per game.
The team has also faced many season-ending injuries including Sydney Colson (torn ACL), Aari McDonald (broken bone in foot), Chloe Bibbly (left knee injury), and Sophie Cunningham (torn MCL).
“I don’t know that I’ve been through all of these things collectively in my career, let alone in one season,” said White (WishTV, Aug. 20, 2025). “But we also have a group that is ready to respond.”
Caitlin Clark, the team’s most talked-about player, is out due to a right groin injury and a bruised left ankle. The hope was that Mitchell’s hot streak could give Clark time to fully heal.
“The experience throughout the year, trying to come back and come back quickly, has also taught her that she needs to make sure that she’s 100 percent,” said White (ESPN, Aug. 17, 2025).
With the regular season ending, the Fever have decided that Clark will be out for the rest of the season, including the playoffs. Still, they are determined to keep trying despite the setbacks and are projected as sixth or seventh seed team in the playoffs.
“Nobody feels sorry for you, we can’t feel sorry for ourselves… we get adversity right now… and we get to find out who we’re going to be throughout it,” said White (Sportskeeda, Aug. 6, 2025).
