Day of service (formally known as Choice Day) is a fun day where students get to pick their own classes to go to based on the different activities and sessions teachers host. The day will operate on a normal 7-period schedule day allowing for 7 different activities for students to attend. Teachers will pick activities to host every period, normally revolving around what they teach or a club that they host. This year, we have invited Thorpe Creek Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and Fall Creek Intermediate schools to attend the high school on Day of Service and participate in these activities with other students. The elementary schools will be here from 8:30-11:55 (periods 1-3) and the intermediate schools will follow from 12:00-3:00 (periods 4-7). Below are a few different sessions that teachers are hosting involving the elementary and intermediate school kids. Most of these options are open to all students, but not all of them. If you are interested in any of these sessions, feel free to sign up for their corresponding period in enriching students.
Make-A-Wish:
The Make-A-Wish club, sponsored by Mrs. Jackie Purcell, is hosting card making sessions for the younger kids and all high schoolers on Friday. They will host sessions during 1 & 2 periods and then 5 & 6 periods. There will be elementary kids there during 2nd period and intermediate kids in periods 5 & 6. The kids, supported by the high schoolers, will make encouraging cards to give to kids who will soon be granted their wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation. The kids will decorate, write and sign cards to congratulate and build excitement for various Wish kids. “This activity is a pay it forward event,” Purcell said. “Students can be part of something bigger than them as well as bring joy to and celebrate Make a Wish kids in need.” This activity is open to any and all students who would like to help encourage Make-A-Wish kids. If you have any questions, or would like more information, reach out to Jackie Purcell at [email protected].
Early Childhood Education:
The Early Childhood Education class, taught by Mrs. Jessica Williams, is hosting read aloud sessions for the younger kids and high schoolers on Friday. They will host sessions for elementary kids in periods 2 & 3. The students in the Early Childhood Education class have created children’s books about nutrition and being healthy. Along with the books, they have created props and activities to go along with their books. The students in the class will be reading their books and completing the activities with their elementary students. A group of younger students will be paired with a high schooler and they will read the books to the kids and they will listen and learn about nutrition and how to eat healthy. “High schoolers will have the benefits of sharing their books with their intended audience along with supporting the learning of young children,” Williams said. “We don’t get many opportunities to put theory into practice and work with children so this will be a fun activity for [the high schoolers] to engage in kids!” Unfortunately, this activity is only limited to the students in the Early Childhood Education class.
Kindness Rocks:
Mrs. Amanda Cole will be hosting a session for elementary kids where they will be able to create kindness rocks. She will be housing elementary students during 1 & 2 periods on Friday. During these sessions, elementary and high school students will be given a couple of smooth rocks that they will then paint or draw encouraging sayings, drawings, pictures etc. After decorating their rocks, they will all go on a kindness walk to hide the rocks around the school or in the parking lot for other students and teachers to find. Alternatively- the students may choose to keep their rock to then give to one of their friends, parents, teachers etc. “I’m hoping the high schoolers will enjoy working with the younger students and helping them to do something creative,” Cole said. “We hope this activity brightens someone’s day when they find a cute rock!” This activity is open to any and all students who are interested in spreading awareness around their school. Baking:
The FCCLA Leadership and Culinary Club, taught by Mrs. Leah Ann Self and Miss Megan Davis, will be hosting a baking session on Friday. They will be housing the elementary students during periods 2 & 3. During these sessions, the high schoolers will be baking cookies along with the elementary students. These sessions will help the student leaders understand how to teach and direct younger students by guiding them through the different steps of baking cookies. “A fun time baking with student leaders and working along side them to make cookies for our public servants,” Self said. “Our students will benefit by building their leadership skills while contributing to and thanking those who serve our community. Who doesn’t like cookies?” This activity is open first to the leadership students in the two clubs and then opened up to the members of the group.
