With October just around the corner, it’s time for seniors to get serious about college applications. While the process can feel overwhelming, tackling it early will save you the stress of scrambling the week before deadlines hit. Here are five steps to make the process smoother.
- Research schools. Start by making a list of 5–10 colleges that interest you. Then, use Naviance to see if they fall into your reach, match, or safety categories. Having a balanced list ensures you’ll have options no matter what.
- Gather application materials. Once you’ve narrowed down your schools, begin collecting everything you’ll need. This typically includes your transcript, personal essay, letters of recommendation, and possibly standardized test scores. You can request transcripts and recommendation letters through Naviance. If you’re unsure how, check the College and Career Instagram (@hsecollege), where you’ll find helpful tutorial videos.
- Submit your applications. You’ll either apply through the Common App or directly through a school’s website. The Common App is a great choice if you’re applying to multiple schools since you’ll only have to fill out most information once. Keep in mind that some colleges may require additional essays or materials. If you’re only applying to one or two schools, applying directly through the school’s site may be easier.
- Complete the FAFSA. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is essential for accessing scholarships, grants, and government aid. It doesn’t cost anything to fill out and skipping it could mean missing out on money to help cover college costs.
- Double-check everything. After submitting your applications, confirm that all materials including transcripts, recommendations, and essays were received. Make sure you’ve also paid any application fees. Then, keep a close eye on your email and Common App account for updates from schools.
Most colleges set their early deadlines around November 1st, but don’t wait until the last minute. Submitting early can ease your stress and give you peace of mind. With fall break approaching, it’s the perfect time to finalize essays, double-check forms, and hit “submit.”
